Ingress update brings ‘under attack’ notifications and bug fixes

Today we’re seeing a quick update for the somewhat popular but still in beta game from Google called Ingress. Google’s Niantic Labs released the game back in November in a very limited beta, and the game is still in that same state today. However, for those lucky enough to be enjoying the game it received quite the update today with lots of improvements. Sorry, it will still drain your battery faster than the speed of sound. Read on for more details.

ingress

The few times we’ve enjoyed Ingress the continuous GPS access and other always-on aspects absolutely kills your battery life, and hopefully that will somehow be addressed before this ever gets a public release. Ingress had a big showing at Google I/O this year, but they didn’t announce anything specific for the game.

So for those in the resistance (since that’s how I roll) here’s what’s new for Ingress today. The update will bring the game to version 1.26 and Android notifications are a big part of it. You’ll now be warned in a notification when your portal is under attack, or you’ve neutralized the threat and more. Here’s the full changelog.

• Portal health and faction control info on Portal Keys in the Inventory carousel.
• Android Notifications for “Portal under attack,” “Portal neutralized,” and “@” messages.
• Support for Jarvis Virus and ADA Refactor objects.
• New Recharge visual animation.
• Bug fixes

In case you didn’t catch that near the end of the notifications part. You’ll now get notified when someone in-game sends you a message to your codename. Instead of just getting it in-app, you’ll receive these notifications right in the standard Android pulldown bar.

Sadly with many phones going to full 1080p lately we thought that would get addressed, but sadly it did not. There’s still a few issues with the GALAXY S 4, HTC One, DROID DNA, and all those other 1920 x 1080p full HD smartphones. You’d think someone at Google would be all over that, but I guess they all use 720p Nexus 4 phones instead. Get the latest update right now and let us know what you think of the new recharge animations and more.

Latest Sony Xperia ZL C6506 update now rolling out OTA

Sony Xperia ZL

OTA starts rolling for the latest update previously only available with a manual install

Well then, here's a nice surprise. Our unlocked Xperia ZL (that's the C6506 model) has just received a 66.1MB OTA update touting improved battery life, user experience and software performance. The update is to version 10.1.1.A.1.253, which is the build that has been available for a couple of days (according to Sony) but only via its desktop companion software. After quickly downloading, the update will install with just one more tap and indicated that it will take "about 9 minutes" to update (which seems about right). You'll still be on Android 4.1.2 and likely won't see any other cosmetic changes from what we can tell.

We obviously haven't had enough time to evaluate whether or not Sony's claims of improved battery life and software performance are true, but we'll take any improvements they have for us. If you have an unlocked Xperia ZL, be sure to head into your settings menu and check for the update.

Ingress app gets a major update

Ingress

Major update delivers new features and support for new animations, notifications, bug fixes

Ingress, everyone's favorite sci-fi virtual reality simulation game, got a major update this afternoon. Everything you love about the game is still there, with less bugs, but a couple very nice features were added.

  • Portal health and faction control info on Portal Keys in the Inventory carousel.
  • Android Notifications for "Portal under attack," "Portal neutralized," and "@<codename>" messages.
  • Support for Jarvis Virus and ADA Refactor objects.
  • New Recharge visual animation.

The new notification system will get all the attention, but the new information displayed about your Portal keys in inventory is probably the change people will use the most. The Jarvis Virus is something new started earlier this month, and it will flip an infected Portal to the opposing faction.

You can get today's update from the Google Play link above, and learn more about Ingress (and try to score an invite) in the Ingress forums.

Vudu Player update allows movie downloads on iPhone, iPad

Vudu Player finally allows movie downloads on iPhone, iPad

Coming months after the feature’s introduction on Android and PCs, Vudu has updated the iOS version of its app with the ability to download movies for viewing offline. Unlike the Android version, this feature is not restricted to tablets however, with downloads of your Vudu / Ultraviolet collection on iPads and iPhones. Other tweaks include making the Player “easier to use” and adding closed captions on iPhone. The Flixster app already allowed for Ultraviolet movie downloads on iOS, however Vudu has access to some movies that may not be available there. The updated version of the free app is available on on iTunes, although you will need an associated account (with updated password info) with unlocked videos to get any use out of it.

Samsung Galaxy S III 4.2.2 update leaks with GALAXY S 4 features

We saw T-Mobile begin rolling out a Galaxy S III update last week. That update was bringing the handset to Android 4.1.2 with new features to include multi-window, however it looks like that will not be the most recent Galaxy S III update for very long. A Galaxy S III update that is said to still be in the testing phase has recently leaked. This one is Android 4.2.2 with a build ID of JDQ39.

Samsung-galaxy-S-III112

For now we haven’t heard anything from the carriers and instead this leak has reportedly come direct from Samsung. Assuming the testing phase goes will, this update is expected to come available in June. Of course, that will be initially available for unlocked handsets and carrier specific models will likely be waiting quite a bit longer. Putting the potential wait aside, lets discuss the features which look to include more than a few from the GALAXY S 4.

Android 4.2.2 build JDQ39 for the Galaxy S III should be getting goodies to include new screen modes, voice controls and an updated S-Voice. These are all GALAXY S 4 features with the new screen modes being Adapt Display and Professional Photo. The other GALAXY S 4 feature, the enhanced voice controls will allow the user to control their phone with their voice.

Galaxy S III users will also be getting the lockscreen from the GALAXY S 4. This will include support for multiple widgets, the Ripple and Light unlock effects and the ability to set a personal message as well as change the clock size. Aside from the GALAXY S 4 specific items, this update also adds a few other Jelly Bean goodies. The changelog points towards items to include Daydream as well as a new driving mode, actionable alerts, new additions in the Notification Center, the ability to run Samsung apps in full-screen and a new Smart Switch widget.

The gallery will also see some changes. In this case it looks like users will have the option to choose a white background. Finally, the remaining item here is an updated Settings app. This one will bring a tabbed interface to the settings and should be familiar for those who have used a GALAXY S 4. All said and done, it looks like Samsung has a decent update for the Galaxy S III in the works, not lets just hope the carriers will approve and release it without much in terms of a wait.

US based HTC One unlocked and Developer editions getting small update

OTA

Small update with system enhancements, still based on Android 4.1.2

HTC One phones that were sold unlocked via HTC, including the developer editions, in the U.S.A. are getting a small over-the-air update today. As you can see it's a 17MB file containing "important enhancements and bug fixes". Without seeing the actual change log, we're going to guess this is an update you'll probably want to take.

When all said and done, you're at Software Number 1.29.1540.16,  Android version 4.1.2 and HTC Sense 5.0. The usual warnings about root and custom recovery apply, so be sure to have that RUU handy, or wait for a flashable version.

Google+ Android app update adding new Photos experience

Google confirmed 41 new features for Google+ last week during I/O. As of today however, it looks like they have detailed 42. This latest update is for the Android Google+ app and touches on three items — images, location and the overall stream. Additionally, there was also talk of notifications, profile editing and quicker access to the recently released Hangouts app.

gplus-images-540

That said, lets dive in with the images. With these Google appears aimed at making the whole image experience simpler. The features here include Auto-Backup, Auto-Highlight and Auto-Enhance as well as Auto-Awesome. These items can all be accessed by visiting the Photos section from the Google+ Android app and for the most part, they sound as they are. Take Auto Backup for example, your images will be automatically backed up to the cloud.

Auto Highlight will allow you to browse a selection of top shots and Auto Enhance will allow for what Google describes as “subtle” and automatic improvements to your images. Lastly, there is Auto Awesome which will allow for the creation of animations, panoramas and more based on your images.

gplus-location-540

While Google+ Photos seem to have attracted the most attention, there was also the Location changes. These have the Google+ app with a new section called Locations. From here you ail be able to see where your friends happen to be. These locations are displayed on a map and will only be shown for friends who are already sharing their location with you. The Locations section will be accessible from the left hand menu. For those worried, your location sharing can be adjusted using the settings.

Otherwise, remaining Google+ app changes include the stream, which in this case mean the addition of hashtags. Those browsing their activity stream will be able to see the hashtags in the upper right hand corner of posts. These hashtags are automatically added by Google and when clicked, you will get additional content based on that particular tag. Users can also choose to manually add hashtags.

Remaining items include tweaks to the notifications along with the ability to edit a bit more of your profile from the Android app. Plus, there is the previously mentioned one-click access to Hangouts. With that, the Google+ for Android app is expected to arrive in the Google Play Store today and will be available for devices running Android 4.0 or later.

Google+ app update for Android adds auto-backup and enhancement tools for photos

Google Plus app update for Android adds autobackup and enhancement tools for photos

Google (and especially the Google+ team) are keeping very busy. While I/O 2013 may have wrapped up last week, the company’s just unveiled a new update for its social network on Android devices. Packing some familiar new photo features (like auto-backup and auto-highlights), the refresh includes even more Snapseed filters and tools. Location sharing can now tap into your circle arrangements, and you’ll be able to share geo-locations with specific sets of people. Related hashtags will now function within the app, like we’ve already seen on the web-based version, while (perhaps predictably) there’s now one-tap access to Mountain View’s Hangouts app too. Gotta keep ‘em all connected, right?

Galaxy S4 Mega, S4 Active and S4 Mini hinted in app update text

WatchON updateNew Samsung handsets outed in changelog for WatchON TV application

Rumors have been circulating for a few weeks that Samsung is working on a "Galaxy S4 Mini," as well as a ruggedized version of its current flagship device. Today an app changelog entry for the Galaxy S4's pre-loaded TV app could indicate that both are on the way, along with another device known as the "S4 Mega."

The shot above, sent our way by tipster Paul, shows that the recent 5.0.4 update for Samsung WatchON adds "support for [the] upcoming S4 Mega, S4 mini and S4 Active." The changelog has since been updated to remove the reference, suggesting that someone let the cat out of the bag a little early. The S4 Mini name has been rumored for some time, and the device is refers to extensively leaked. The S4 Active name would seem to refer to the rumored "waterproof" S4 variant. But the S4 Mega is a bit more of a mystery — could the existing Galaxy Mega have been renamed? Or might this be a different large-screened S4 variant.

Whatever the case, the fact that WatchON has been updated with support for all three devices suggests that they'll likely include the S4's TV-controlling capabilities.

We'll have to wait and see if and when the Galaxy S4 Active, Mini and Mega emerge. Whatever form these handsets take, Samsung looks set to fully capitalize on the halo effect created by its high-profile Galaxy S4 launch.

Thanks to Paul for tipping us the image above through the new Android Central app!

Hangouts quietly gets a new update to fix tablet woes

google-io-hangouts-1

Google this week at Google I/O unveiled its unified messaging service called Hangouts (our app review here). The Google Talk replacement has had a rocky launch, causing update woes for many, especially those with a tablet. Rest assured that Google has quietly pushed out a new update for Hangouts, which will make the app compatible with tablets of varying sizes.

Keep in mind that users may still be experiencing compatibility issues, as the service is being pushed out over several days. So it shouldn’t be long before users running Android 2.3 or higher see Google Talk get replaced with the Hangouts interface.

The excitement for Hangouts has dwindled a little bit as users learned that, unlike iMessages, it does not have SMS support yet. The sort-o good news is that Google Hangouts Community Manager Dori Storbeck confirmed that SMS support was coming, but quickly rescinded her comment saying, “we actually have nothing to announce at this time.” However, there’s still hope for SMS integration, as the app still requests a number of SMS permissions.

Have you downloaded the new update for Hangouts? Has it fixed the tablet woes that were previously an issue? Better yet, have you gotten to use the new messaging service?
