Samsung: Galaxy S4 sales to top 10 million next week, Galaxy Note 3 arriving at IFA 2013

Samsung’s JK Shin on Thursday told reporters that Galaxy S4 sales would soon top 10 million, while also cautiously answering Galaxy Note 3 flexible display-related questions.

According to Samsung’s mobile chief, the Galaxy S4 will hit the 10 million sales mark next week, a lot earlier than it predecessor did:

“We are confident that we will pass more than 10 million sales of the S4 next week. It is selling much faster than the previous model S3,” Samsung Electronics co-CEO Shin Jong-kyun told reporters at an industry forum in Seoul, Thursday.

The Galaxy S3 topped 10 million sold units 50 days after launch last year, while the Galaxy S4 will do it in less than a month. The handset was launched on April 26 in South Korea, with other major markets receiving it a day later. Currently, the Galaxy S4 is sold in 60 different countries.

Just the other day, we learned that Samsung sold over 5 million Galaxy S4 units in the first two weeks after launch.

Interestingly, Shin also answered a question regarding the adoption of “unbreakable displays” or flexible displays for the Galaxy Note 3. Enigmatically he said that “more time will be needed,” which seems to fall in line with a very recent report that claimed the new Note model would not pack a flexible display nor will it feature a metal design – however, details on the actual design of the phone were not offered:

“More time will be needed,” he said. The Suwon, Gyeonggi Province-based outfit is developing the Note3 with a 5.9-inch OLED display. The device will debut at this year’s IFA trade fair in Berlin, Germany, officials said.

As you can see Korea Times also notes that other “officials” said that the Galaxy Note 3 would arrive at IFA 2013, although they haven’t been named.

Previous rumors did suggest that Samsung would announce the third-generation Galaxy Note 3 at IFA 2013, which wouldn’t be surprising considering that the previous models have been unveiled at the same show.

Samsung GALAXY S 4 sales to hit 10 million next week

Samsung GALAXY S 4 sales are expected to cross the 10 million mark within the week. Assuming things play out as Samsung is expecting, this would have the GALAXY S 4 taking the fastest sales honor away from the Galaxy S III. The talk of GALAXY S 4 sales is coming by way of Samsung CEO JK Shin who had been speaking at an industry event in Seoul.

The Galaxy S III took 50 days to reach 10 million so if GALAXY S 4 sales topped 10 million next week, that would be roughly 20 days quicker. Needless to say, we are fairly certain Samsung will provide some sort of announcement after the milestone has been reached. In the meantime, JK Shin has said;

“Samsung spent 50 days to pass the 10 million sales mark for the S3. The S4 will be Samsung’s first ’10 million seller’ device less than a month after its official debut,”

Looking back, Samsung began selling the GALAXY S 4 in Korea on April 26 and since that point, the handset has come available in 60 different countries. Aside from waiting for the current sales figures to crest 10 million, the GALAXY S 4 has been getting more than a fair amount of attention lately. The handset recently became the first smartphone to achieve the TCO Certification and the folks at Fitbit have also enabled syncing over Bluetooth.

Otherwise, we did see somewhat of a GALAXY S 4 related surprise coming out of Google I/O this year. There was a Google Edition GALAXY S 4 announced that will arrive running a vanilla Android installation. This particular model isn’t going to be available until June 26th, however it will be arriving unlocked. The hardware specs for the Google Edition GALAXY S 4 remain the same as the regular model, however the handset will get updates in a manner similar to the Nexus line of devices.

Aside from talk of the GALAXY S 4, Shin also commented briefly on the Galaxy Note III. In speaking about a flexible display, Shin said “more time will be needed” and that for now, the Note III will be launching with a 5.9-inch OLED display and that the handset will be unveiled during IFA 2013.

JK Shin: Galaxy S4 to top 10 million sold next week

JK Shin

Galaxy S4 could pass the 10 million mark twice as quickly as the S3

JK Shin has told the Korean press that he expects the Samsung Galaxy S4 to pass 10 million units sold next week. Speaking with the Korea Times, the Samsung co-CEO said he was "confident" the milestone would be met, adding "it is selling much faster than the previous model S3."

The Galaxy S4 benefits from having launched across three major U.S. carriers at the same time as the global launch. By contrast, the U.S. release of the S3 took place several months behind the initial European launch. That device passed the 10 million mark in late July 2012, having begun shipping a little under two months earlier. If the S4 hits 10 million next week, it'd mean S4s are being shifted twice as fast as last year's S3. It'd also make it Samsung's fastest-selling smartphone, the Korea Times notes.

The last set of shipment numbers reported in the Korean press suggested 6 million GS4s had shipped as of May 10. Today's Korea Times article refers to units sold, not units shipped, so it's possible the distinction may have been lost in translation. Either way, that's a lot of Galaxy S4s.

Samsung’s Galaxy S 4 to hit 10 million in sales next week, says CEO JK Shin

Samsung's Galaxy S 4 to hit 10 million in sales next week, says CEO JK Shin

According to co-CEO JK Shin, Samsung’s Galaxy S 4 will soon hit the 10 million mark in sales, less than a month after its debut. That beats the Galaxy S III’s time to that mark by nearly three weeks, making it far and away the company’s quickest seller, ever. The model will also get another push thanks to a stock Android 4.2 version that’ll be available for $ 649 at Google Play on June 26th, but so far it’s an impressive figure, considering its bizarre reveal.

Google’s Blink team pulls 8.8 million lines of WebKit code in one month

Chrome Blink

Google let us all know that it would strip out unneeded WebKit code to make its Blink web engine scream, but it never said exactly what kind of pace we could expect. The answer, it turns out, is “breakneck.” The company’s Alex Komoroske told Google I/O attendees that the Open Web Platform team has already yanked 8.8 million lines of programming from Blink in about a month, with 4.5 million of them scrubbed almost immediately. Removing so much cruft has reportedly improved not just the upcoming engine, but the engineers — they’re far more productive, Komoroske says. The team has already had time to explore new rendering techniques and garner code contribution requests from the likes of Adobe, Intel and even Microsoft. Although we don’t yet know if all the trimming will be noticeable to end users by the time Blink reaches polished Chrome and Chrome OS releases, it’s safe to say that some developers won’t recognize what they see.

Google I/O 2013: 900 million Android activations and 48 billion app installs

The 2013 Google I/O keynote has begun and as we often hear in the beginning, they are talking numbers. In this case, Android numbers relating to activations and a bit about Google Play installs and revenue. Looking back, 2011 had 100 million device activations and 2012 brought that number up to 400 million.

20130515_060949-L

From that point it was said the “momentum has been breathtaking since then.” Translating breathtaking momentum into numbers and Google was referring to 40 million activations in October of 2010 and 200 million in November 2011. At present, that yearly number has increased to 900 million and it has been dubbed an “extraordinary achievement.”

Shifting away from the installations and into Google Play. The number here is 48 billion, with a B. That is for app installs, of which there were 2.8 billion during the previous month. Given the app install number is high, one may suspect the developers are doing well as a result.

In regards to this, Google shared that revenue per user is 2.5 times what it was last year. Seems like developers should have a bit easier time trying to decide which platform to work with. Touching on the revenue in dollars and while Google didn’t mention specifics, they did say they have paid more this year (in 4 months) than they did in all of 2012.

Plenty more Google I/O coverage still to come so make sure to keep an eye on the portal. In the meantime, while we are already looking at 900 million activations this year — anyone have a guess as to how big that number will be by the end of the year?

Samsung says it’s already shipped 6 million Galaxy S4s

Samsung Galaxy S4

Four million shipped in first four days, Korean press reports

With strong brand recognition, an colossal marketing budget and plenty of anticipation among smartphone buyers, it was almost inevitable that Samsung was going to see enormous demand for its new Galaxy S4 handset. According to an unnamed Samsung executive quoted by Korea's Chosun Ilbo newspaper, the company shipped four million Galaxy S4s between Apr. 26 and Apr. 30, and as of May 10, shipment numbers stood at 6 million.

Of course, a unit shipped isn't necessarily a unit sold to a customer, but the shipment figures do show a strong appetite for Samsung's latest handset among its carrier and retail partners. The Galaxy S4 has benefited from a smoother global roll-out than its predecessor, with Europe, North America and parts of Asia, including Samsung's native South Korea, getting the phone in late April.

If previous Galaxy handsets are any indication, this isn't the last story we'll be writing about shipment and sales milestones for the Galaxy S4. Samsung itself is hoping to hit the 10 million shipped mark by the end of May, the Chosun Ilbo reports.

Samsung sets internal record with 4 million Galaxy S 4 smartphones shipped

I think we all knew that Samsung was going to have a huge hit on its hands with the Galaxy S 4 smartphone. The device is destined to be one of the most popular smartphones 2013 and one of the biggest sellers in the entire smartphone industry. Samsung has now reportedly set an internal record for Galaxy S 4 shipments.

Screen-Shot-2013-04-23-at-3.00.32-PM-540x314

According to an unnamed company executive, by the end of April Samsung had already shipped 4 million S 4 smartphones to wireless carriers around the world. That is an internal record for Samsung. For comparison, it took Samsung 21 days to ship 3 million Galaxy S III smartphones to carriers globally.

It also took Samsung 55 days to ship 3 million Galaxy S II smartphones. Clearly, carriers expect huge demand for Samsung’s newest offering. Demand for the device is still growing with the unnamed executive saying that as of Friday the company had sold more than 6 million of the smartphones.

The executive also predicted that by the end of the month Samsung could ship as many as 10 million S 4 smartphones. You do need to be aware of one little factoid with these numbers from Samsung, these are sales to wireless carriers not to end users. With Samsung’s track record with its Galaxy S line of smartphones, there is little doubt that the vast majority of these devices will find their way into consumer hands.

If you’re wondering how early demand for the S 4 stacks up against demand for the iPhone 5 when it launched, Apple still has the edge. Apple sold 5 million iPhone 5 smartphones the first week the device was available. However, demand for the iPhone 5 has now cooled as people realized that it was an incremental update at best.

CyanogenMod breaches the 5 million user mark

CyanogenMod

CyanogenMod, one of Android community’s favourite custom ROMs, has come a long way since the day of its inception, from starting as a one-man mod mission to now having collected over 5 million users. As a CyanogenMod 10.1 user myself, I’d like to offer my congratulations to the entire team on this momentous achievement.

According to the official CyanogenMod statistics page, the ROM now has 5,078,265 total installs, correct at the time of writing, 1,884,054 of which are official installs and a further 3,194,211 unofficial (user compiled) ones.

If you were to include all of the ROMs based on CyanogenMod as well the number would probably have breached 5 million a while ago, but unfortunately we don’t have the exact figures for that.

We can break these numbers down even further. Rather unremarkably, the Nightly versions of CyanogenMod 10 (Jelly Bean) are the most popular. Perhaps a little more surprisingly, Nightly builds of the older CyanogenMod 7 are the second most popular, followed by the finalised 7.2.0 Gingerbread based ROM.

To put CyanogenMod’s popularity into perspective, we’ll remind you that MIUI reached over 10 million users a little while ago, but MIUI has the added advantage of coming pre-installed on a handset, the Xiaomi MI2, which added 1.3 million users in just 4 minutes of pre-orders. So whilst CyanogenMod isn’t the biggest custom ROM around, it still has an impressive install base considering that it relies solely on community support.

Anyway, congratulations CyanogenMod, next stop 10 million!
