Hangouts/Babel doesn’t include SMS support (yet?), Android 4.3 also mentioned in rumor update

google-babel-chat-service

A report detailing Google’s rumored Babel messaging app that would be launched in the near future has been updated to include more information about the service, but also about other Google products, Android 4.3-included.

The same The Verge forum poster that revealed yesterday that Babel will in fact be called Hangout, revealing some of its features, has updated that post with more information.

After previously revealing that the app would offer a unified messaging solution to Android users, feature an app icon “similar to the messenger icon” and offer a Holo UI, the tipster returned with more information.

According to him, Babel will be called Hangouts (as in plural; as in Google+ Hangouts) not Hangout as previously reported. Not that the final name of the app will be that important, will it?

What’s more interesting is that Hangouts apparently lacks SMS/MMS sync, or at least the feature is “not there on the app that’s being dogfooded.” Moreover, the same Ryan Socio suggested that the final version may lack SMS support at first, when answering to a comment on his updated news:

The fact that it’s about 10 days away from launch doesn’t make the situation feel anymore promising.

Socio also added that Google Now would get “location-based reminders” and Gmail’s would be “Holofied” in a “UI overhaul.”

In addition to dishing out all these details on future products, Socio briefly mentioned Android 4.3 in his updated post, basically confirming this particular Android version that has been already spotted in server logs, and may be already the object of meetings between certain companies involved with Android:

I may not be able to get much info about 4.3, my sources are not taking part in the internal beta program.

While he isn’t apparently in the loop with Android 4.3 news, hardware information may be available next week. In the past, he apparently provided accurate information about Google’s latest hardware announcements (LG Nexus 4, Nexus 7 and Nexus 10) so he could very well be right about Google’s plans for Google I/O 2013.

That said, we’ll remind you that we don’t have anything official from Google at this time on either Hangouts/Hangout/Babel, Google Now, Gmail or Android 4.3, so we’ll have to take everything with a grain of salt until things become clearer. Google I/O is just 10 days away, an event that we’ll thoroughly cover for you.

More rumored HTC M4 details posted online, HTC One-like design mentioned

HTC M4

A new HTC M4 rumor mentions specs and design details alongside a purported image of the unannounced device.

The article, which has been published on Phone Arena via @evleaks, says that the HTC M4 will be positioned as an HTC One-like device, but with lower specs (something similar to what the Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini is in comparison to the S3). Of course, we’ll have to wait for an official announcement from HTC to see if these rumors will be confirmed.

In terms of look, the M4 is said to be very similar to the HTC One, but the handset will obviously be smaller and the quality of the materials used will be slightly lower (a previous report said that HTC would be using a metal chassis exclusively from Catcher, in order to avoid the supply problems it faced with the One). Still, you’ll have a tough time telling them apart without a closer look. Looking at the posted picture (which you can see below), I would tend to agree.

HTC M4

Most of the specs rumored in the previous report have appeared in this one, too. The previous M4 rumor mentioned a 1.2GHz Snapdragon 400 processor, while the current one talks about a dual-core CPU (Qualcomm has recently demonstrated the dual-core 400). But, while it was previously said that the smartphone would have 1GB of RAM, @evleaks says that 2GB of RAM will be found on board.

The two sources agree on the 4.3-inch 720p resolution display, the UltraPixel camera and Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2 OS. But now we’re also told the HTC M4 will pack 16GB of internal memory and a 1700mAh battery, which is non-removable.

As for release date, the end of the second quarter is mentioned. The previous rumor said it would be coming in June, with LTE on board.

Would you be interested in getting an HTC M4 that will offer you such specs?

AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon Galaxy S4 release dates mentioned in reportedly leaked Staples memo

samsung galaxy s4 4 aa 600

“Tentative” release dates for the AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon Galaxy S4 versions have been spotted in what’s said to be a leaked Staples memo.

According to the document received by Phone Arena, AT&T could launch the Galaxy S4 on April 26, followed by T-Mobile on May 1 and Verzion on May 30.

The memo also reveals that Staples could start pre-orders, or reservations, beginning with April 16. Coincidentally, that’s the same day Walmart will reportedly start taking in-store pre-orders for the handset according to a different leak provided earlier by the same publication. Moreover, AT&T and U.S. Cellular have already confirmed that they will start taking pre-orders on the same day.

Like with the previous leak, we can’t say at this time whether this is a real document or a fabricated one, so we’ll hang on to our grain of salt until Staples properly announces its Galaxy S4 sales.

We will point out that while T-Mobile revealed during its UNcarrier event a few weeks ago that it will stock the Galaxy S4 starting with May 1, AT&T has not mentioned launch details for the handset in its pre-order announcement.

staples-memo-galaxy-s4-pre-order

As for Verizon, the carrier has not even made its Galaxy S4 official yet, and it’s yet to start taking pre-orders for the handset.

The purported Staples document does mention the same May 1 launch date for the T-Mobile Galaxy S4, but the other two potential release dates have not been seen before when talking about the AT&T and Verizon Galaxy S4 launches.

For what it’s worth, the UK Galaxy S4 will be released on April 26, this being the earliest confirmed release date for the handset.

As for that May 30 launch date listed for the Verizon Galaxy S4, we’ll note that, if real, it wouldn’t surprise us to see Verizon launch a highly anticipated device a lot later than the competition.

We’ll be back with more U.S. Galaxy S4 availability details in the coming days, as soon as we find out more details about the phone’s launch in the region.

Touchscreen Google Chromebook confirmed by WSJ, Pixel or Link codenames not mentioned

Chromebook Pixel Jellyfish

A Chromebook laptop with Google branding and featuring a touchscreen display could be one of the most interesting Google products of the year, and a new Wall Street Journal report seems to back up previous rumors on the matter.

Just a short while ago we saw a concept video of the Chromebook Pixel (also known as Link,) and various proof that seem to confirm the existence of this particular Google project.

The Search giant has not acknowledged it yet – and did not comment on the matter when contacted by WSJ – but the fact that the publication has ran a story of the unreleased product is itself a very important indication that the touchscreen Chromebook is coming.

However, the WSJ article is not that revealing when it comes to actual details for the device. We still have no idea who’s making it for Google, when it will be announced and launched, how much it will cost and what features it will have to offer, you know, in addition to a touchscreen display and cloud-based Chrome OS running under the hood.

Are you buying a Chromebook this year?

Nexus 7-like Asus Fonepad coming with aluminum body, release date and pricing also mentioned

Asus-Fonepad-back-ME371MG-2

The Asus Fonepad (model number ME371MG) that was spotted in a few reports so far, could be officially unveiled in the following weeks at MWC 2013, but while we wait, we have more unconfirmed details for you regarding this Intel-powered new budget-friendly tablet.

The Fonepad is rumored to hit stores in the second quarter. Bulgarian site Tablet.bg is pointing out to a May release in the country, with pricing starting at 500-600 Lev for 3G versions, which converts to $ 346-415. U.S. pricing will surely differ, to keep the Fonepad on par with other budget tablet in the region.

The same source provides an image of the tablet’s back, which seems to indicate the device will come with an aluminum body, Intel Inside logo included. Comparatively, the Nexus 7, has a rubber back, so this is certainly an interesting choice for Asus, although it’s yet to be confirmed.

As for specs and features, the ME371MG will reportedly offer you a 7-inch IPS display with 1280 x 800 resolution, 1.2GHz Intel Atom Z2420 processor, PowerVR SGX540 GPU, 1GB of RAM 8/16/32 memory with microSD support, 3-megapixel camera, 1.2-megapixel front-facing camera, 3G support (for some models only,) 4270mAh battery and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

Anyone looking forward to the Asus Fonepad?

Thanks, Simeon!

Xperia Z LTE spotted at O2 Germany, February launch mentioned

sony-xperia-z-lte-o2-germany-1

One of the most interesting devices of early 2013 is the freshly announced Sony Xperia Z, which was unveiled a few days ago in Las Vegas at CES.

Since then we saw a variety of mobile operators and electronics retailers announcing plans to sell the device, with the smartphone slated to hit stores in the first quarter of the year.

O2 Germany is ready to join the group of future Xperia Z providers, and the German mobile operator is already listing on its website the LTE version of the handset.

While pricing details and actual availability dates are not public yet, the carrier does that the Xperia Z LTE will be available to order in February, so there’s plenty of reasons to get excited.

We expect even more carriers to announce Xperia Z availability soon, and we can’t but notice that Sony is doing quite well so far at ensuring its next flagship device will enjoy a close-to-simultaneous launch in various international markets several months ahead before some of its main competitors will be released, including the Samsung Galaxy S4, the HTC M7, the LG Optimus G2, the upcoming Nexus 5 or the iPhone 5S/6.

Let’s hear it from German Android fans out there! Will you buy the Xperia Z LTE next month?

Galaxy S4 smartphone mentioned by Samsung exec, name appears to be confirmed

Samsung-Galaxy-S4

In early 2012 we have witnessed a plethora of nonsensical rumors that suggested the Galaxy S3 may be rebranded as something else, and it took a while until it was confirmed that the company’s flagship device would be known as the third member of the Galaxy S family.

Hopefully we’re not going to see the same phenomenon occur in the following months, as it would be rather strange to see Samsung baptize the Galaxy S4 anything other than, well, Galaxy S4. After all, the Galaxy S is probably the strongest Android brand out there, and it would make no sense to have the name of a famous product line changed.

In fact, that’s what current rumors and leaks call the device, not that we’d expect it to have a different moniker. To further clear the air, we have a new report from IT Pro Portal that says a Samsung exec has already mentioned the Galaxy S4 smartphone during a very recent event – the Invest in Photonics in Bordeaux:

So when Kit Lam, who is the Chief Innovation Officer at SERI [Samsung Electronics Research Institute], comes on stage to run through his presentation and lets slip the words “Galaxy S4” during the speech, it’s certainly worth taking note of; given that hitherto no one from Samsung had uttered anything about the follow-up to the S3.

This is the first semi-official confirmation of the existence of the Samsung Galaxy S4 that has reached us. The name could well be a guess from Lam but given his position within SERI, it’s debatable.

Lam did not mention any details about the Galaxy S4, not that we’d expect Samsung execs to spill the beans on the device quite yet.

As for referring to the device by its proper name, that’s not exactly a leak, since every Android fan and their grandmother probably knows that a Galaxy S4 will follow the Galaxy S3, so there’s no point pretending it won’t be made.

Are you already saving money to buy the Galaxy S4 as soon as it comes out?

Sony Xperia Yuga specs and features leaked, Xperia Odin also mentioned

Sony Yuga

According to the garden variety of leaks and rumors, Sony is working on a couple of new Xperia flagship devices of its own, the Yuga and the Odin, although they’re yet to get official.

While waiting for the company to reveal more details about these devices, we have been pointed to a Sony-related conversation taking place on the xda-developers Forum, where senior member Spectre 51 had more details to share about the two devices.

Apparently the Sony Xperia Yuga is a 5-inch smartphone that will feature a 1080p display, 1.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, 2GB of RAM Exmor Camera sensor and 1080p HDR video recording and 2400mAh battery. The device is also going to be water and dust resistant.

Curiously though, the Sony Xperia Odin will share some of the Yuga’s characteristics. According to the same thread, the device will have the same design, and same CPU as the Yuga, while its battery will be slightly smaller at 2300mAh:

Okay got to see some info. The Odin is slightly smaller dimensions but barely. Same CPU. s4 Pro quad core 1.5ghz 2gb ram. Both will have exmor camera sensor and do 1080p hdr video.

Only real difference I could see was the battery elements resistance of the yuga and the yuga has something called digital touch that wasn’t listed for the odin. Not sure what that is. Yuga will be the flagship. These phones look amazing. So looking forward to them. Yuga is calling my name.

Both devices will apparently be made of glass, “front and back (shatter proof film both sides)” and they should be released at some point in March/April 2013, although it’s not known which model will come to the States.

We’ll be back with more details about the Yuga and the Odin the minute we have them. In the mean time, let’s hear it from phablet fans out there, are you looking forward for Sony’s 5-inch devices?

Thanks, tipster!
