Huawei Ascend P2 look-alike unveiled in Japan, dubbed GL07S

Hot on the heels of the spectacular Ascend D2 and the crazy Ascend Mate, Huawei seemed to prep another doozy of a phone – the P2. This new fellow leaked for the first time a few days after CES, but it was never really clear what were Huawei’s intentions for it.

Some reports said the P2 was a 5-inch Full HD handheld, while others had its screen pinned down at 4.7 inches and 720p. The CPU was another cause of controversy, with an obviously unreliable source telling us it could pack as much as eight cores.

But now, as if we weren’t confused enough, there’s a Huawei GL07S official to muddy the water even further. This fellow looks exactly like the P2 pics we’ve recently seen, but comes with a slightly underwhelming spec sheet.

Not awful, just not that great. There’s a 4.7-inch 720p screen on this thing, a quad-core 1.5 GHz K3V2 CPU, 1 GB of RAM, a 13 MP rear-facing snapper, a 1.3 MP front-facing cam, 32 GB of on-board storage, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, LTE and a 2,350 mAh battery.

Oddly, the GL07S is a tad thinner than P2’s expected “waist”, at 8.6 mm. Which got us thinking – could this be what the P1S was for the P1 last year, only with poorer specs? We certainly hope so, because we’d hate to give up on the 1080p display, 2 gigs of RAM and 3,000 mAh battery speculated to be inside the “real” Ascend P2.

At the same time, the GL07S could also be just a regional version of the P2, as it’s only been confirmed for Emobile Japan for now. In any case, we expect MWC to clear the air. And, hopefully, make Huawei look as kewl as it did at last month’s CES.

Amazon introducing a new virtual currency for the Kindle Fire dubbed “Amazon Coins”

amazon-Kindle-Fire-cyber-monday

Amazon released a press release Tuesday morning announcing a new virtual currency. Launching in May, Amazon Coins will be, ”another substantial opportunity to drive traffic, downloads and increase monetization even further” for developers, according to the press release.

The virtual currency will work as a new form of payment for purchasing apps, games and in-app items in its Appstore on the Kindle Fire. Amazon has not said how one would go about acquiring Amazon Coins. We expect additional information to be revealed as we get closer to its launch date.

Paul Ryder, Amazon’s Vice President of Apps and Games, announced that the company will be giving away tens of millions of dollars in Amazon Coins. This will help jump start the currency on its launch day. Developers who want to be apart of the launch will need to have their apps submitted and approved in the Appstore by April 25.

The new virtual currency is an awesome idea. Hopefully it will not function like Microsoft Points. The way the press release was worded, it sounds like you’ll be able to acquire Amazon Coins through achievements, playing certain games and etc. We’ll keep everyone updated as more information is revealed.

Tesla Model S dubbed 'world's quickest production electronic vehicle' by NEDRA, runs 14 mile in 12 seconds

We already knew the Tesla Model S was fast, but not this fast. After dropping a 12.371 quarter mile this past weekend at the Palm Beach International Raceway in Florida (@ 110.84 MPH), the National Electric Drag Racing Association awarded the Tesla Model S its stamp of officiation for being “the quickest production vehicle” in quarter mile tests. That’s not just on a single pass, mind you, but several quarter mile runs over the course of a day at the track. Each pass reaffirmed a 12-second average from the 416HP electric beast — more than proficient for a 4,700-lb hulk of metal, and more than competitive against much lighter and more expensive beasts. And that’s all without internal combustion, lest you forget — the thing even gets 350 miles per charge. Drag Times attended the event and promises video in the coming days, but for now you can peep the quarter mile timeslips and read their rundown.
