Verizon HTC One reality returns as DROID DNA offer pops up

Today Verizon has once again stoked the fires of possibility for an HTC One as they place the DROID DNA on a social sharing fire sale. This situation could go one of two ways – one, it’s possible that the Verizon special event later this week will result in a new color option for the Samsung GALAXY S 4 before its final release in three days. Two – it could be that the DROID DNA is being essentially given away for free now allowing the carrier to make room for the fabled Verizon HTC One.

htcone_androidcommunity_review7-540x348

The DROID DNA is a slightly larger machine, working with a 1080p display but spreading it across a 5-inch display, making it 441PPI. The HTC One has a 1080p display spread across a 4.7-inch display, making it 469PPI, and coming in at a definition and screen size so similar to the DNA that it’d be baffling to have both devices carried by the same business.

The HTC One works with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 600, a quad-core processor that out-does the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor the DROID DNA works with. This is the same processor the LG-made Google Nexus 4 uses in the DNA, while the HTC One uses the same processor that comes in the Samsung GALAXY S 4.

Meanwhile both devices have 2GB of RAM and Android Jelly Bean, though the HTC One’s user interface is a totally different situation due to its employment of BlinkFeed.

This week at CTIA 2013 in Las Vegas, Verizon is holding a special event that will reveal something super exciting – or so they say. It’s rare at the moment to see a company as large as Verizon reveal anything of note at CTIA, generally reserving announcements for side events to keep all the press for themselves.

Here though, it might just be a killer move to move in on the event that’s been all but abandoned by companies left and right. This may be a point at which the technology convention is waning, but just like a stock market, Verizon could be pulling up just as the rest of the industry has found themselves at the bottom of the interest floor.

Stay tuned as Android Community explores the show floor at CTIA 2013 and sees everything there is to see from companies great and small. Verizon’s event will take place on the 22nd – be here early!

HTC Droid DNA available for free from Verizon if you hurry

HTC Droid DNA

The HTC Droid DNA is now available for free from Verizon, for a limited period of time only.

According to the carrier’s website, you can get a free HTC Droid DNA with a new two-year contract, as long as you follow some simple instructions. However, you must do so until May 21, as that’s when the offer is set to end.

First, you have to enter your email address on the promotion page, after which Verizon will send a promotional code to that e-mail address. Once you have received the code in question, head to the Verizon website and use the code upon checkout when getting a new two-year activation to get your free HTC Droid DNA.

The promotion does sound pretty good, and it gets you a device with some interesting specs, including a 5-inch 1080p display (441 ppi pixel density), Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro chipset with 1.5GHz quad-core Krait processor, 2GB of RAM memory and 16GB of internal storage. The device also has an 8-megapixel rear camera, as well as a 2.1-megapixel front one.

You can check out our review of the HTC Droid DNA to get a better idea about what it offers:

While this is all very good news (especially if you were planning on getting a two-year contract anyway), it’s pretty normal to ask ourselves why would Verizon want to sell a lot of these devices in such a quick manner? You may remember the rumors about the HTC One being the device to replace the Droid DNA in the carrier’s lineup, and now the same speculation is made on various websites.

What do you think? Will Verizon carry the HTC One after all?

Verizon offering free Droid DNA promotion for limited time

Droid DNA

A quick way to save on a great device if you're going to order online

Verizon has just started running a promotion on its website offering a coupon code that knocks down the price of a Droid DNA to $ 0 on-contract, which is a substantial savings. Holding its spot as the flagship for the "Droid" brand on Verizon since November last year, the DNA has stayed at $ 199 on-contract since its release. All you have to do to get a coupon code for the device is provide your email address to Verizon at the source link below, where you'll then receive a code to apply at the online checkout for the savings. The promotion is only valid until May 21st, so you've got a week to make up your mind on this one. Even at 6 months old the DNA is still a great option on Verizon.

The fact that Verizon is running a promotion to sell a device that is over 6 months old now should come as no surprise to anyone at this point. Carriers (often inexplicably) go through phases of discounting and promoting devices that they want to push, especially when they get to be this far into their lifecycle. However it will be interesting to see whether or not the standard price of the DNA will drop following this promotion.

Droid DNA offer brings Verizon HTC One speculation

Talk of the Verizon HTC One seems to have been a fairly popular topic over the recent weeks. Verizon hasn’t offered any announcement and HTC Director of PR Tom Harlin recently said the Droid DNA would continue to serve as the “HTC hero smartphone at Verizon.” Putting that aside, Verizon Wireless has recently announced a special offer on the Droid DNA and it has once again brought back chatter about the HTC One.

P1090312

First and foremost here, the offer. This one appears to be in the simpler side. Those interested will be able to score a free Droid DNA with Verizon. A two-year agreement is required and the offer will expire on May 21, 2013. The offer is broken down into a few steps and begins with you submitting your email address in exchange for a promo code. Once the promo code is received it can be used to claim your free Droid DNA. You only need to enter the code during the checkout process.

free-droid-dna-offer

Moving away from the special offer on the Droid DNA and into the chatter about the HTC One. The question here is why Verizon would be offering the current HTC hero device for free. The speculation suggests that this may be a way of clearing inventory ahead of a new HTC hero device coming to the lineup. That new hero device could be the One. But again, Verizon has yet to make any announcement that states the HTC One is coming.

That brings the next question; Would it be wise to move to a Droid DNA right now? Well, while individual opinions will vary, we will offer this — it is hard to argue with free. Keeping in mind that the Droid DNA is not the newest phone on the market and the HTC One has gotten solid reviews, this could still be a good move for some. If you are the person that needs the latest and greatest at all times, the answer is likely no.

On the flip side though, the Droid DNA retains a solid set of specs. The handset is running Jelly Bean and sporting a 5-inch 1080p display with Gorilla Glass 2. The handset also features a quad-core 1.5GHz processor with 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, 2020 mAh battery, an 8 megapixel rear-facing camera and 4G LTE connectivity. All that being said, those looking for a bit more on the Droid DNA may benefit from our review, which can be read here and seen in the video sitting above.

Google X Phone rumors: Droid Blast feature, ‘X M’ version and Google cancelation

motorola-nexus-plus-6

Motorola Nexus+ concept phone

A new series of Google X Phone rumors have hit the web, bringing even more confusion to the table when considering previous reports.

We’ll start with the wildest X Phone rumor yet, originating from a Chinese “analyst” with 18 years of experience – we couldn’t exactly verify her expertise, hence the quotes – who has been quoted by several blogs saying that Google has given up on the Motorola X Phone, passing the handset back to Motorola as it reportedly lacked innovation.

One argument in favor of Sun Chang Xu’s opinion – the analyst in question – is that she has almost a million followers on China’s Twitter version Weibo. However, upon close inspection of that Weibo account one would notice that it’s more like almost 100,000 followers there – which is still a lot, but that number certainly paints a different picture.

However, the main reason why we’re not inclined to trust this particular rumor is that the analyst isn’t really mentioning anything about where she got her information. Last time we checked, various Google execs including Larry Page and Eric Schmidt seemed psyched about Motorola’s upcoming smartphones, something that’s a lot more telling about Motorola’s future than what an “analyst” from China can tell us.

The second fresh X Phone rumor is a bit more interesting, but equally confusing considering previous reports.

Droid-Blast-Gesture-Screen-Shot

A person with access to the handset told Hot Hardware that the phone’s ROM lists the device as “X,” which probably stands for X Phone.

Apparently the handset offers a 4.8-inch display with 1280 x 720 resolution, Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, 2GB of RAM and a processor that “tests slightly slower than the Samsung Galaxy S3 in AnTuTu benchmark, at least in its early stages of development.”

What’s puzzling is that Verizon is said to be the first U.S. carrier to receive the device, not AT&T as previously reported by other publications. AT&T was said to have a short X Phone exclusive in the U.S. after which time other operators would stock the device.

Moreover, the same source says that there will be two X Phone version, the “X” and a smaller “X M” model – an “X” mini?

In addition to certain hardware features, the insider has also shared a screenshot (above) that reveals a new photo and video sharing feature called “Droid Blast.” However, other screenshots or images of the device have not been shown.

We expect to see more X Phone rumors in the future, so take everything with a grain of salt for now, especially unsubstantiated wild stuff that comes from Chinese analysts. While you wait for the X Phone to be made official, you can always check out this interesting Motorola Nexus+ concept (top image).

New DROID RAZR M and DROID RAZR HD color reportedly headed to Verizon

Motorola

The DROID RAZR M and DROID RAZR HD, at the time of this writing, only come in two colors: white and black. According to @evleaks, It seems that both the RAZR M and RAZR HD are getting a paint job.

This is, of course, not official by any means, as Verizon hasn’t announced anything themselves. The images were found by @evleaks, who tweeted:

Motorola DROID RAZR HD in blue, DROID RAZR M in blue, and DROID RAZR M employee edition, all for Verizon

Motorola released a platinum colored DROID RAZR M a few months ago. As expected, the device was for Verizon Wireless, but it was selling exclusively through Best Buy for $ 49.99 on a new two-year contract. It was a simple color refresh — there were no hardware changes whatsoever.

Based on that, if these photos turn out to be legit, this will probably turn out to be a simple color refresh as well. On the other hand, the RAZR M on the far right in the image above is one that the public won’t be able to get their hands on. According to the tweet above, it’s supposed to be an employee edition and it’ll no doubt have an awesome design, but the same hardware on the inside. Of course, there’s a chance that it’ll pop up on eBay eventually.

verizon-motorola-razr-hd-blue

As always, it’s wise to take this with a grain of salt for now. There’s been no confirmation from Verizon, so we’re not sure if these pictures are legit or not. Regardless, it’d be nice to see more color options for the RAZR M and RAZR HD.

DROID RAZR M and RAZR HD refresh expected to bring a new color

Motorola introduced a platinum colored DROID RAZR M a few months back. The handset was for Verizon Wireless and was selling exclusively through big box retailer Best Buy. That particular model was a simple color refresh and the handset carried the same specs and $ 49.99 price tag. Well, flash forward till today and it looks like the DROID RAZR M may soon be getting another color refresh.

BJswQkACMAEq5Vc

The color this time around is blue. Additionally, the DROID RAZR HD is also expected to arrive in blue. We have yet to see an announcement from either Motorola or Verizon Wireless and instead the details are coming by way of @evleaks. While no source can be 100 percent reliable, this is one that has been proven in the past.

Basically, if you had been considering the purchase of a DROID RAZR M or RAZR HD with Verizon Wireless and really like the idea of getting the handset in blue — you may want to hold back for a little while to see how this all shakes out. Otherwise, we would also expect the blue models to be available for a limited time such as what we saw with the pink DROID RAZR M.

Shifting over to the far right of the above image, that third handset is one that most users will never get a chance to own. That one is said to be an employee edition RAZR M. For this, we would expect this one to launch with a different styling on the outside, but with the specs and internals being the same as the regular RAZR M.

Verizon HTC One rumors pushed aside as DROID DNA remains HTC hero

There has been plenty of back and forth in terms of the HTC One coming to Verizon Wireless. Well, maybe not as much back and forth as rumors. Regardless though, HTC execs had been chatting on Yahoo! earlier today and naturally, the subject of the Verizon HTC One came up. The question was posed in two parts with the first being whether Verizon will be getting a version of the One.

htcone_androidcommunity_review10-540x29831

The second part went on to ask if there was another model in development for Verizon. It almost seems like the second part was asked knowing the first part was going to result in a no. The interesting and somewhat frustrating part here, HTC Director of PR Tom Harlin didn’t say yes or no. Instead he mentioned another previously released phone.

Harlin started with the rumors here by saying that while there have been “tons of rumors” they have yet to make any official announcement about the HTC One coming to Verizon. If you take that for what it is, they simply haven’t made any announcement — he didn’t say yes it would or no it would not be released. Harlin then went on to mention the DROID DNA.

“The DROID DNA continues to be the HTC hero smartphone at Verizon. It launched in late 2012, it’s features still compete with products in 2013. When we announce our next product with Verizon, we’ll make a big deal about it so you’re all aware.”

Basically, a non-answer on the Verizon HTC One. The interesting part here is the fact the question continues to come up. If nothing else, that should show HTC that people really want to see the One on Verizon. So how about it, anyone here still have hope in terms of seeing the HTC One released with Verizon? Or have you moved on and began looking towards another recently released handset?

Droid DNA clone HTC Deluxe coming to Cellcom

HTC Deluxe

The HTC Deluxe shows up again, this time in Wisconsin

Cellcom, the regional carrier from Wisconsin, has unveiled their next marquee device — the HTC Deluxe. It's basically the HTC Droid DNA repackaged for the small network, which means it's a pretty damn good piece of equipment. If you need a refresher, that means it has a quad-core Snapdragon Pro CPU, a 5-inch 1080p display, 2GB of RAM, and an LTE radio to keep the data flowing.

No word on when it will arrive, just that it's coming "soon" for $ 199 with a new contract or $ 570 if you buy it outright. If you're a Cellcom subscriber, this is definitely worth a second look. See the source link for more details.

Source: Cellcom. Thanks, Aaron!
